Hi everyone. Im looking for some advice. My 7 month old son is not tolerating lumpy food. He has been spoon fed from 4 months as he is a big baby and was hungry. The last 2 days ive tried to introduce lumpier food but he is gagging alot and throwing up. He can manage the smooth baby jars no problem i then tried the lumpier ones but he was being sick. Then I tried making a bit of potatoe, used a hand held mixer to make it fluffy and put tiny bit of soup over it but hes still gagging.

Has anyone got any advice on what i can do next?? What I can give him next to try?? Could it be that he just isnt ready?? I havent introduced finger food yet as im afraid of the gagging also or even choking.

Don't worry about it. All babies wean at their own speed and they all get there in the end. Stick to smooth for now and just try every now and then with lumpy foods but don't get frustrated if he doesn't like them. He may skip the lumpy textured baby food and go straight to finger foods or foods which require more chewing.

My first baby weaned really easily with no problems at all but my second is also 7 months old and he's only taking a few spoon fulls of food a day. He's been doing this since he's 5 months old so he's slow going.

Introducing finger foods is always a bit scary because we all worry about choking but just we there and watch carefully. Try finding something which melts in the mouth like Farleys rusks. I think theres some Ellas Kitchen biscuits too which my son likes and they're smaller and easy for them to hold. I don't remember what they're called but they come in an orange box.

It sounds to me like he perhaps isn't quite ready just yet. Its quite normal for babies to gag a little bit every now and then with lumpier foods. Its a new sensation and it can be strange for them swallowing lumps. I know when I first introduced lumpy foods to my daughter she gagged a little at first. I would advise you leave it a little longer before introducing lumpier foods and do it gradually. Try offering him foods like bread sticks, wafers or rusks that he can hold himself. He will learn to chew food then. You could then try offering him slightly lumpier purees. Baby pasta is great to start with too. Its really soft but it will help to get him used to the lumpier texture of food. So I'd leave it a couple of weeks and try again. When you do try again though, don't be alarmed if he does gag a little. Like I said, it does take a bit of getting used to.

If lumpy foods are gagging him, stay with the smooth until he is introduced to finger foods. Potatoes are usually a gaggy food just because of their grainy consistency. Try Cheerios or bits of cracker (like Ritz or a saltine) and hold it in your hand to see if he can pick it up. If not, pinch the cracker between your thumb and forefinger to make crumbs and put that in his mouth. If he tolerates it, try giving him a piece smaller than a dime. Some people have a stronger gag reflex than others .. maybe your baby is one of them. If nothing works, give it up for now and try it again in a couple of weeks. I'm thinking that as soon as he finds out he can 'rub' pieces of food into his mouth with his hand, he'll accept it.

Your baby is letting you know that he is not ready yet to try lumpy foods. The best thing to do is to stop feeding them and continue with what you were giving him. You can also offer bits of cereal or dry toast or small bits of soft foods that are familiar to him to allow him to try other foods without gagging. If he has difficulty with that as well, just drop it and wait 3-4 months and try again. He will soon be grabbing food off your plate to try.

Seven months is still very young; your baby has plenty of time to become accustomed to Stage 2 foods. Keep giving him Stage 1 and try again in a few weeks. Our son started to successfully eat Stage 2 foods at around 8 months. Good luck!

my daughter is 7 months and, like your baby, has been eating food since 4 months. She wouldn't eat jars at all, so instead i started giving her the same meals as my older kids which she loved. I also started her on finger foods at the same time, things like toast with jam, just to get her used to eating solids. She hasn't choked on anything, yet. She does sometimes look like she's gonna be sick when she's trying to swallow a bit of food. But this isn't the same as choking. Babies pull all sorts of faces when they first start eating and getting used to it! I'm sure your son will be fine, just keep trying him with different thing as he is definitely old enough. GOOD LUCK!

This is really common - loads of babies are confused by food which they almost but not quite don't need to chew. The answer is to give them _bigger_ pieces, i.e. finger food. They have no choice but to chew that so they don't get confused.

If he's not interested in chewing on finger food either, just wait a few weeks. He's only little. It isn't a race.

My son _still_ hates nearly but not quite smooth foods...and he's twelve!

Not recommended to give baby solid foods until 6/12. Damages the gut.

Make the food less lumpy and increase the texture slowly

My son was like that until he was 9 months old. He would not even eat meat before that!

One day, he woke up and decided lumpy food was ok!

Keep on offering it to him everyday, just a few bites so he can familiarize himself with it, but don't force it on him. He'll eventually be ready on his own.

You might want to talk to his doctor. He might have an issues with lumpy food in his mouth. Was he born early by any chance? Preemies can have issues with food textures.
