Question:
Breastfeeding - do Celeb mums set a good example?
2007-09-09 09:57:20 UTC
How many of them do you hear talking to the press about Breastfeeding? Or actually get snapped doing it?

It just seems that some of them like Katie "Jordan" Price" are happy to get their breasts out in the papers but not to use them for the purpose for which they were intended!

And while I fully acknowledge that some women are unable to breastfeed it seems more likely that these famous women prefer not to risk ruining the shape of their boobs and the convenience of being able to hand their offspring over to a nanny when they need to jetoff on some exotic assignment rather than spend the next 6 months with a baby attached to their nipples and end up with boobs like two deflated balloons!

Surely famous mums could set a good example by giving their babies the best start and encouraging others to follow their trend.

I for one am stil breastfeeding my 9 month old son and am very proud to be doing so!

Not as many either do it, or make it public... I'm not sure but I would have loved to see them all on the cover of Parenting, US Weekly, People, or any other magazine doing it, or at least speaking about it in an article!!!

I did find this:

Tori Amos

Pamela Anderson

Erykah Badu

Christie Brinkley

Katie Couric

Tipper Gore

Faith Hill

Madonna

Joan Lunden

Andie McDowell

Elle McPherson

Demi Moore

Julianne Moore

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Few Hollywood moms nursed their babies publicly, but there are some particularly notable exceptions. For example, Keely Shaye-Smith, wife of James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan. She appeared on the cover of Redbook magazine nursing their baby. And model Jerry Hall once appeared in the pages of Vanity Fair breastfeeding her son with Mick Jagger, Gabriel. http://sheknows.com/about/look/173.htm

I don't think the asker is saying that every woman should- simply that they should try it.

I don't know much about Gwen Stefani- just that she is breastfeeding her baby and he is amost 2. I have to say, I was surprised to hear this because it is so rare that celebs do. I hope ohter new moms- particularly young moms will try it by her example alone.

No, breastfeeding does not ruin your breasts- pregnancy does.

No, breastfed babies should not be weaned at 1 year if mom and baby are happy.

Yes, breastfed babies who are breastfed past a year do still receive the nutrients in the breastmilk after a year so there is still a benefit to nursing. That is a myth!

Likewise, babies start to get their teeth in at 5-6 months of age- and this does not by any means mean that they must automatically wean.

Hey Dee hun I think women who breastfeed just cant understand why other women dont. What they dont realise is that they made the choice to breastfeed - other people have different preferences! Yes its the most natural thing in the world - but the only time the breastmilk has much more nutrients than formula is the first few days when the Colostrum (mega nutrients (",) is there. Personally I wont be breastfeeding but I might give it a go for those first few days xxxxxxxx

Wendy- our baby started to get teeth at only 5 months of age- are you suggesting that it is then that mom's should wean babies???? The AAP recommends at least 1 year of age for breastfeeding. World Health Organization says 2 years. Our baby is now 13 months old and still nursing. If it offends- that's really too bad. She is healthy and doing well.

Helo- quite honestly, breastmilk after a year DOES offer nutritional value- they are still getting the antibodies in the breastmilk which keeps them healthy and well.

Gwen Stefani sets a very good example. I hope that other moms will look to her and at least try breastfeeding. It's easy, always ready, and the benefits to baby are amazing. Our son was breastfed and is never sick. He is now 10 and still reaps the benefits of having been breastfed.

I work full-time and both of my children were born tongue tied- and still they breastfed. I pumped at work 3 times a day- and our baby has never had forumla. It CAN be done. You have to work at it, but it's so worth it.

Breastfeeding does not ruin your breasts, pregnancy does and the hormones that are there due to the pregnancy.

I know Gwen Stefani, Maggie Gyllenhaal (sp?), Gwyneth Paltrow, Lucy Lawless, Madonna, Noah Wylie's wife and Felicity Huffman have all bf'ed their babies and been snapped doing so. A few of them, (stefani, wylie, paltrow) went at least a year. It's good to see them doing it since some people really do look up to them. But I have to ask, When has a celebrity ever been that great of a role model?

I think it is wrong to have a baby and off load it on to a nanny.

When you have a baby it's a joy not a burden. I've never had a baby(I'm trying for one.)

When I have a baby I'm going to breast feed.

Celeb mum's should realise that when a baby gets breast fed it strengthens the mother and baby bond and the baby gets all the nutrients it needs. (so what if you get saggy boobs as long as you have a healthy baby and a strong bond)

I can't waist till I have a baby!

I really don't understand it they seem to think its ok to pose topless in a magazine but not to feed their baby if there is a crying baby or a mum breast feeding by me i don't mind beacuse its natural and we as a society need to accept it and be warm towards them rather than get pissed or disgusted some people are just so prudy these days!

Alot of celebs tend not to breast feed and i think thats a bad example

to be honest i don't think celebrities have to necessarily set an example all the time. like we non celebrities, they have different opinions and views on what's right, different personal preferences and things they just don't want to do for their own reasons, whether it's right or not. The sooner we stop putting them on pedestals and need them to make an example, the better in my opinion.

Many celebrities just want to get on with lives doing what they have to do without having to set an example all the time. If they choose to campaign for some kind of awareness because they believe in something then that's fine, but raising children is hard enough without the pressure of needing to set an example all the times.

On a related note, it really irks me how these celebs say how wonderful it is to be mothers. Sure, that's easy to say when they have nannies, tutors, housekeepers, cooks, gardeners, chauffers and personal assistants to do everything.

Frankly I am not interested in what celebrities do.

Why do you care what other people do? It's not affecting you directly, you don't even know these people, you have no idea what the do with their children in their PERSONAL lives.

And to the person who said breastfeeding is the best way to build a bond? You must not have children. You are clueless. My first child was only 4 1/2 lbs so he couldn't breast feed, and I had bad milk with my second. Pumping and giving them a bottle gives them the same exact nutrients.

Oh and nursing your child after 12 months is ridiculous. The milk has absolutely no nutritional value to them anymore. Woman who breastfeed their children until the are 3 and 4 are just wrong. A child shouldn't even have a bottle after 18 months.

I cant actually think of anything that celeb mums do set a good example for...

If somebody wants to breastfeed that is their choice. Your not the mom nazi. I was not breast fed and am happy and healthy. If you want to breast feed do it. Doesn't mean everybody else has to. They invented formula for a REASON!
