We flew quite a bit on long flights with small babies. Keep you baby awake if possible for a few hours before you fly. If he is fussy when you get on the plane, jiggle him, talk to him, but do not feed him. Feed him right as you start to taxi out or go up. That will help him not have trouble with his ears. He will also then go to sleep. Let him sleep as long as possible. Have Tylenol available and use it. You can get up and walk with him, and be sure to have teethers, cookies, whatever you do at home. And relax, babies cry more when you are tense.

Tell the people around you when he is crying in the beginning that you plan to feed him to sleep right at take off and he will not cry the whole time, but just be patient while we load and get ready. Most people will understand, and even the ones who don't were babies themselves once, too.

Yeah, Tom, your funny, but seriously. Get 10 - 15 teething rings . . freeze them over night. Get a small, insulated bag to keep them in, so they don't thaw out. sometimes, you can get the flight attendants to store the bag in their ice maker. Let your baby chomp away. There are also some topical numbing treatments you can use that help with teething. You'll find it at most large discount stores near the toothpaste. have a good trip!

We flew for 8 hours with our 3 month old while he was teething and we had success with:

Feeding him something when going up and going down

Making sure he had things to chew on-

Had Tylenol (Paracetamol) and teething gel on hand in case.

Also had a few "toys"- fun to look and bat at at things

They didn't have a prob. with us walking with him- I spent a bit of time at the back of the plane just rocking him. Basically: some remedies and some distractions. And of course lots of prayer! He did REALLY WELL. Best of luck.

I did that smae flight....from Newark to Fairbanks. Talk to your ped....ours told us that we could give our son(10mo) at the time a small dose of children's benadryl to make him sleepy...but only if absolutely needed. He was cutting 2 of his top teeth and we kept a bottle of the Hyland's teething tablets within reach at all time. He lives on those things when he is teething. He hated the teething rings. Good luck! I hope that you have some really nice people on your flight...we did and it made the flight so much better!

You are saying the trip is 10 hours, what can be done for comfort? Get two or three pacifiers that can be frozen. Give them to the stewardess, and she could keep rotating them. (Put them in a plastic bag) There is also a side of me that says ask the pediatrician's for something sedating.

You can get baby orajel at a drug store or cold wash rags worked for my son.I would wet it in cold water and hold an ice cube in it to get it colder and the roughness of the cloth helped and he liked to suck the water out of it so make sure its clean.

A good, natural thing to do, especially since you won't have access to a freezer for the toys everyone is mentioning is to use vanilla extract. Something in it soothes sore gums, and it also tastes good. I used to dip my finger in it and my children would just chew on my finger. It worked really well, and kept them calm.
