my first daughter was born at 29wks gestation and weighed 1 lb. 3 oz. She was small for gestational age due to intrauterine growth retardation, which meant for me was that she stopped growing at 24wks. She had patent ductus arteriosus and pulmonary stenosis ( pulmonary artery looked like a pearl necklace.) Other wise no serious health problems. She was diagnosed as failure to thrive. She stayed in the nicu for 107 days. She came home weighing a little over three pounds. The doctors like to tell parents of preemies that thier baby should catch up to kids their own age by 2. Although that does happen more often than not, I think that is very irresponsible. I clung to that hope. She didn't catch up. She has gross motor and fine motor delays. she also has speech delays. She also has emotional instabilities. She is now 5 years old and weighs 30 pounds. She is other wise quite delightful and wouldn't trade my experience with her for the world

I had my first premie at 26 weeks. I had a 2lb. 4 oz. boy. He was taken csection and was given a 50/50 chance of life. I was preeclamptic. He was intibated soon after birth. He stayed on it for over 3 months. I was not able to touch him for the first week and did not hold him until he was 3 weeks old. He had brain hemorages on both sides of his brain. The right side was a degree 4(this is the worst) and the left was a degree 3. The doctor told me to expect my son to be a vegetable. He would not function in normal day to day life. I would have to care for him the rest of my life. He was also diagnosed with hydrocephlis. He was shunted for it and they would withdraw fluid from it every day. One day the fluid just stopped building up around his brain and he has not needed anything done with it since. He came home one week shy of being there 4 months. He weighed less than 6lb. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and is affected on his right side. He is almost 9 years old and is in public school. He if a far cry from being a vegetable!!
My second child was born on time with no problems except for jondice.
My third was born at 31 weeks. She weighed 2lbs. 11onz. I had been in the hospital for two weeks with preeclampcia again. This time I was able to get steroid injections that helped develope her lungs. She was not intibated but had a canula around her nose to help her breath. With in 7 weeks she was able to come home. She did have to take some medicine to help with spitting up but is now 11 months old and doing great. She is small for her age but so is her sister that was born on time. She is very healthy. I do believe that technology changed ALOT with in those 8 years between my kids birth.

Go to your local NICU if you live in a large enough city and see if you can volunteer, even if it's just "gofer" work. You can get a lot of experience there. My son spent 5 days in the NICU after he was born, but not because of being premature, he was severely jaundiced. I saw so many tiny babies there it made me want to cry, and sometimes I did. If you can't volunteer, ask one of the nurses there or some of the parents, they may be willing to share stories to help them heal and grieve.
