my LO is 10 weeks old tomorrow. I'm going on a 3 hour road trip to my sisters house tomorrow. My hubby can't go because he has work. So it's just me & the baby for the weekend. I'm sort of nervous about the trip because we've never travelled that far with her before especially by myself. We'll be gone overnight & then coming back the next day. How much of everything should I pack? & if you have any suggestions or advice for the road trip that would be great! Thank everyone!

Well done on taking the big step! Feels a little daunting doesn't it. :)

My son was 11 weeks old when we had our first trip away (6 hour train ride) and I had sleepless nights before it worrying about it but turns out I was worrying over nothing. I was worried he'd be unsettled and cry etc etc.

Main thing is try to relax as much as possible about the whole thing or your little one will pick up on your anxiety and be more restless.

Remember, at this age baby will still sleep for periods of time so try to coincide this with part of your journey, either the beginning or the end. Babies tend to like car journeys as the motion soothes them to sleep. Feed baby before you go and get LO all comfy.

Sing and talk whilst you are driving if baby gets irritable and if all else fails just remember that although the journey takes 3 hours it doesn't mean it has to be, you can take a little longer. What I mean is if baby really needs a cuddle then pull over for a bit. Perhaps even schedule in a stop or two along the way.

In a few months, when you're planning your next tip you'll wonder why you were ever worried. I'm currently planning another 6 hour train ride with my son who's now 9 months old and crawling.....eeek!

Good luck and enjoy your break.

I took my daughter on her first road trip when she was 9 weeks old. We were going to be gone for 5 days. I took two cases of diapers because I had no idea how much she would use. We went through one case, roughly. So take a bag of diapers, just to be on the safe side. If you're doing formula, then take a whole big can of it. I always say a newborn will go through at least three outfits a day so pack at least 6 outfits, plus pajamas.

My daughter slept almost the entire time we were driving (it was a five hour drive to our destination).

Good luck!

My daughter was around that age when we went on our first road trip. Except we drove about 8 hours. She was fine, I had to pull over and feed her a few times, but otherwise she slept or played in the car seat. 3 hours should be a breeze! You should bring a box of wipes, one of the smaller packages of diapers just in case, and maybe 5 outfits, in case of any blowout diapers. Have fun!
