The car seat is coming from a close friend and I'm in the middle of washing the padding inside but I need to know if I can spray Lysol disinfectant spray on the padding to kill any germs that might be on it.

Washing should be enough. Make sure that you don't dry the cover and padding. And NEVER machine wash the straps or completely immerse them in water. They are spot clean only. I wouldn't want Lysol on something my child was going to be that close to every day, especially their face. Line dry it in the sun. If you think it smells funky, mix some white vinegar with warm water and spray it. Vinegar is a cure-all - cleans and deoderizes as well as repelling pests, all naturally without chemicals that baby or other people can inhale.

Since its a used seat, also run it through this checklist

Its actually unsafe to get a used car seat unless it is coming from a trusted friend or relative and you are 100% positive:

1)it has never been in any wreck

2)it has all the original pieces, including manual

3)it has never been dropped, which means never been checked as luggage at the airport, either, since this frequently happens when checked or gate checked .

4)it is less than 6 years old

5)the straps have never been completely submerged or washed with anything other than mild soap(it messes up the flame retardent treatment)

I would either get a Graco SafeSeat or a Chicco Keyfit. I would be careful about getting a convertible seat for an infant. Some will work just fine, but others have harness strap heights that are too high for a newborn. For example, even though the Britax convertible seats say that they will accomodate an infant as small as five pounds, the harness heights are too high for even a longer than average infant. The straps need to be at or below the infant's shoulders, which means that many convertible seats are simply not going to work.

I don't think it would hurt but maybe soap & water would be better just to be safe. When I got my travel system, it was dusty from being in the box so I washed the padding with Deft in the machine then got some soapy water and washed the plastic parts.

I use Lysol wipes on my daughter's car seat and stroller. Try that

lysol is fine to clean with. let it dry and i doubt they are chewing on it so it is ok. Toys are fine too, you just need to wipe them down after they are sanitized. maybe add a little antibacterial dishsoap to the wash as well.

Yes.

You can also use Vinegar to kill germs. It works great on items that the baby will stick in the mouth.

If you washed it in hot water, or put it in a hot dryer I would think Lysol wouldn't be necessary.

Not if you aren't going to rewash it. Besides sun, and being dry kill most germs anyway.

I think it'll be fine . . . just let it air out a little. It's great you're so careful!

Since it is porous, it'll only help a little.
