My daughter is almost 5 months old, and she came down with the stomach flu last night. We went to the ER at 4 this morning...they put in an IV for fluids and she started doing much better until we left, then she started throwing up again. She's getting better now. Nursing for a minute or two at a time, drinking little bits of Pedialite....keeping it down for now. She just wants to be cuddled and sleep. I'm exhausted but I'm paranoid that once I fall asleep, she'll throw up and start choking again. It's been a very hard and scary experience as a first time mom. Sorry for the ramble...when did your baby get sick for the first time? Did they get the flu as an infant? Did they recover okay? I guess I'm looking for some reassurance. I'm really worried about her. There's nothing worse than seeing your baby sick and helpless...

We caught the stomach flu at our prenatal class reunion. Our daughter was only 2 months old, and I agree that first illness (especially the stomach flu) is just a horrific experience to go through. We were very lucky to have a help line we could call and already had her regular 2 month check up scheduled for the next day, but it was a long about 24 hours of her vomiting, only to be followed by both of us getting absolutely devastatingly ill with the exact same thing. My husband was upstairs vomiting in the upstairs bathroom but I could hear him over the baby monitor which was just 5 feet away from me - but I was too exhausted to even get up and turn it off.

It does get easier. They really do start to build up their immunity (and so do mom and dad). We've had the stomach flu another 2 times since and each time it's been a lot easier. She only threw up once the second time (and we were only nauseous/tired when we had it - no vomiting for us).

Just keep an eye out for dehydration. So long as they can keep even just some of the fluids they're taking in down she'll be ok. When in doubt though call your doctor or head back to the hospital.

Hang in there, and remember most of the time mom and dad have a rougher time than the baby does. Any time our daughter has been sick she's gotten mad as us for waking her up in the middle of the night for a bath when she just wants to sleep (but she's either vomited or had runny diarrhea and needed a bath/bed sheet changed right away).

Having your baby get sick for the 1st time can be heartbreaking and scary. Unfort, babies cant get the flu shot until they are over 6 months old, so during flu season extra precautions need to be taken which arent always easy. Once baby does get sick, it can be scary. As long as she doesnt have any immune deficiencies, she will recover just fine. Keep her hydrated and be sure to measure how much fluids she is taking. If you are breast feeding then it may be wise to pump your milk so you can be accurate on what she is taking in. Pedialyte is an excellent source of electrolytes for a baby. As far as sleeping goes, place her on her side, left side is best. Use a sleep positioner to keep her in place. With the recalls on the positioners, just place a rolled up receiving blanket at the bottom of her butt to keep her from sliding down. Be sure her face is not near the pillow on the positioner. Make sure she cant roll over to her stomach or back, as she can choke and/or suffocate. Be sure to watch her temperature as well.

She will be ok. Dont worry. Good Luck

The first time my oldest got sick he was 9 months old and caught the swine flu. He had febrile seizure and was in the icu for 2 nights and 2 night in the regular children ward. He was very sick and at one point he was on a ventilator. Just do what you can and give all the cuddles you can. Remember that in time it will pass.

Luckily my 3 month old has not been sick yet.

My little guy got the stomach flu @ 6months old. His wasn't as bad as yours little girl.. and I got it too. Nurse a lot.. it will help. Were you told to use Pedialite?? It may upset her tummy because it has milk protein in it which is difficult to digest for her little tummy. Breast milk will be the easiest to digest. Let her cuddle and sleep... just be safe if you cuddle and sleep together ( ie not on a sofa, not too much bedding or pillows around her and you). Trust your instinct.. if you think something is wrong take her back to the hospital...always trust your instinct even at the hospital and with Drs.

11 months old.. He got a pretty bad cold with a fever of 105 and got heat rash after... Luckily he had no reservations about nursing so he got plenty of fluids...

I'd stick to nursing and not pedialite.. Breastmilk has all your baby needs to stay hydrated and it's easy on the stomach.. If she has trouble nursing then pump and give it to her another way...

She simply has a bloodless? Then she and the child will likely be excellent. She simply demands to leisure and keep hydrated... chook soup! Also... she ought to examine together with her OB or Midwife to ensure approximately which drugs are nontoxic to take whilst pregnant. When I used to be pregnant and had a bloodless I did not take some thing... I simply ate tons of soup, took scorching showers and drank plenty of fluids.

My baby got sick at 3months old. It was horrible! He had fever and cough and stuffy nose, I felt so sad for him. Any mother feels bad when her child is sick, so its understandable that you are frustrated. Remember, its going to get better.
