Question:
Baby shopping - what to get first? Please help!?
2010-09-27 07:17:30 UTC
Well in just over a week I will be finding out if i'm having a boy or girl! I'll just be over 21 weeks then. The result being the biggest excitement is also followed by the fact i'm hitting the shops and going beserk!!! (it seems to take forever!) What are the first items do you think I should purchase? I love looking at the clothes etc but I have no idea where to start (it's my first!) because it the sizes are: early baby/newborn/0-6months and I have no idea which size to get because at my 12 weeks scan we were already told it's quite a long baby (i'm around 5ft 11 and my partner is around 6ft 2) and we both carry very tall genes (my dad was 6ft6, cousin 6ft 8! etc) and as much as I want to pile in the clothes, I think it may be too early due to not having an estimate size yet.

What do you think?

get the big expensive things first (or work them in to your budget) like the cot & mattress drawers/wardrobe for clothes etc. pram/pushchair/travel system, car seat , moses basket/crib. then you can move on to bedding, clothes, toiletries and toys.

when buying clothes get the basics these are what your baby will be living in for the 1st few months vests & sleepsuits at least 10 of each! ( is it going to be cold when baby is due? get some cardigans and a snow suit too) 2-3x hats, scratch mits and lots of bibs & socks! if i were you i would go straight for the 0-3 size because your baby could be very long! altho most newborn goes up to 10lbs thats only 22in long ( my daughter was 7lb 13oz and 20 inches long, her daddy is 6ft 2in) where as 0-3 goes up to 15lbs and 24in. then you can get a few outfits but most people buy you them as gifts, get some 3-6 stuff in too as babys grow really fast! good luck

I noticed that once I found out I was pregnant, I couldn't help but Oooh and Aaah over baby items. However, I realized that if I started shopping that soon, I would buy wayyy too much stuff..and I live in a tiny apartment. I still ooh and aah over things, but have started actually giving into my guilty pleasure a bit because I'm 7 and a half months. I would hold off on the urges if you feel that you might overshop. Babies grow very quickly and your friends and family will definitely help you when it comes to buying cute baby items! I usually just window shopped or browsed online for adorable baby items. Even fashions for babies change so I'm glad I didn't give in all the time. Even now I window shop and wait a few days before buying anything to make sure I don't end up buying anything unimportant. Have fun for now imagining what your nursery will look like, what type of crib you'd like, if you'll need a breast pump, etc. You don't even know the gender of your baby yet, so definitely do NOT buy any dresses! Lol. Also, remember to read up on baby books and articles so you're keeping healthy yourself. You might want a cute baby with cute accessories, but its health is much more important!

My daughter is long so went into 0-3mths real quick so I would not go too crazy at buying newborn. And also look at what season clothes you are buying or you could end up with a lot unused.

And don't guarantee they will be able to tell. With my first they were able to tell me straight away. But with my second daughter we did not find out till she was born as she would not let us see her bits, and this also happened to a couple of friends of mine recently. Just thought I would let you know as there is nothing more disappointing than expecting to find out then you can't xxxx

My baby is incredibly long and growing like a weed. I'm glad I hardly spent a penny on clothes (got mine 2ndhand from a friend) cause babies wear an outfit twice tops. at 1 month he was in three month old baby clothes. I would by some onsies and sleepers for now. wait to buy the cute outfits.

stick to the essentials. crib, mattress, car seat, stroller... etc

Buy the big stuff first-carseat, stroller, crib, etc....

Skip the early baby and possibly the newborn baby stuff. If they are already telling you baby is that big, just get the 0-6 month stuff. You can always roll sleeves or pant legs up if they are too big.

Congrats!
