I am very worried, my baby's 2 month shot is coming up this friday and they will be giving him these shots, and i don't know what they are for. And when will he be getting the MMR shot? I am very scared they will cause autism since i have been hearing horror stories.

I understand your concern. My daughter is getting her 4 month shots next week. First and foremost, in my opinion, getting the shots outway in risks. I studied the risk of autism and there are not many studies that support vaccines as the cause. Those that do are mostly from the UK. Secondly, as more and more parents decided not to vaccinate, those diseases that were contained when everyone was getting immuned are slowly starting to return. Besides, even though you can get exemptions for your child to start school, everytime there is any type of illness going on, your child will not be able to return until it's over. My mother works in an elementary school, so I know. The MMR shot is not given until your son is 12 months old. Scientists who specialize in autism say that there are signs of autism as early as a 2 month old, so I really don't think autism is started from vacs. The choice is ultimately yours, but trust me, the shots are not as bad as they sound. My daughter had no adverse reactions besides giving me a go to hell look as she recieved them! :>

dpt is diptheria, pertussis and tetnus. ipv is polio vaccine. Here's an article I found. I think the risk of autism is worth it. You don't want your baby catching any of those other diseases. Besides, there's no proof that the autism is being caused by the vaccines.

They get the MMR later, maybe 9 mos or 1 year

The others answered what these vaccines protect against--diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough), and polio. Your concerns about autism are understandable, but not founded in solid evidence. Look at www.quackwatch.org, an excellent source for sorting out what is real and what is not when it comes to western versus alternative medicine. It is broad in scope but has a section dealing specifically with vaccine concerns from a reputable source (backed by the CDC)

I actually just blogged about this very thing this morning here: http://busybusymomma.blogspot.com/2007/04/this-post-started-out-as-comment-on.html

The DPT contains (exact ingredients can vary by brand:

Formaldehyde, Glutaraldehyde, Latex, 2 - Phenoxyethanol, Pertussis toxin, Pertactin, Aluminum as Aluminum phosphate, Diphtheria toxoid, Tetanus toxoid.

IPV:

Aluminum as Aluminum hydroxide, Formaldehyde, Sucrose, Pertussis toxin, Filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA), Diphtheria toxoid, Tetanus toxoid, Bovine (cow) serum albumin, Sodium hydroxide, Hepatitis B, Medium 199, Haemophilus influenzae B, Acetic acid, Trometamol, Sodium hydrogen carbonate, Potassium dihydrogen phosphate, Disodium phosphate dehydrate.

Here's a list of all vaccine ingredients: http://www.novaccine.com/vaccine-ingredients/

GL... and remember EVERY state in the US has vaccine exemptions, the government cannot force you to vaccinate. It is NOT required to attend school, you simply use an exemption.

If I can help you wade through info, just let me know!

DPT, (sometimes DTP) is a mixture of three vaccines, to immunize against diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus.

IPV - Polio
