He got the DTAP, HIB, and IPV today and they said he had a mid ear infection, no fever. She wrote him a prescription for Amoxycillen, can he take that since he got those shots today? We are trying to get in touch with the nurse right now.

Yes, he can. The only antimicrobials that are a problem are:

antivirals with some live virus vaccines (live flu, zoster, and varicella), and

antibiotics with oral (live) typhoid vaccine

Standard guidelines these days do not support giving antibiotics for mild ear infection. Assuming your Ped. is current and competent she would not have written the script unless he needs it. She also presumably knew about the vaccinations, so you already have qualified advice upon that point. Having seen our little guy in hospital recently seriously ill with what started as an ear infection I would strongly suggest you follow the advice you have and begin treatment.

I thought a child couldn't get shots if they were sick (?) But I guess if that's what your provider did...I'd say it was okay. I would wait to hear back from them. I assume she didn't write it for you to wait to fill. If she handed you the rx, then I would take that as go ahead and get it filled unless she told you otherwise.

DTAP, HIB and IPV are all viruses. Antibiotics do not work on viruses. So it will be fine.

I seriously doubt the pediatrician would have written you the scrip if it wasn't okay. Just give the kid the antibiotics before the ear infection gets worse.

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT USE AMOXYCILLEN.
