I go through baby wipes, like they are going out of style.....also pajamas when my baby was younger, when they spit up you have to change them, and then pacifiars, I had about 12 a month ago, and now down to 1. Sippy cups...I think my sink eats those....socks....they disappear also, so a lot of socks would be good. I have tons of blankets, which is good. I would also get extra bottles and nipples.

Depends on how often you want to do laundry. If you have more, you can let the dirty ones pile up before you have to wash them. Personally I didn't use any receiving blankets because they are not big enough to swaddle the baby (except for the ones I took home from the hospital, which were bigger than norm.) I liked the waffle-weave blankets the best because they are stretchy, yet thin. I say maybe 10 of each thing (burp cloths, blankets and BIBS) because you might use more than one a day, and that way you can go a few days before you have to wash.

It really depends on the baby - my baby is breastfed and spit up a lot for the few first months - I used at least one burp cloth a feeding and she ate every two hours for months! Also used 2-3 outfits a day since she could manage to get the spit up on her even with a bib, (yes, also used 2-3 bibs a day,) and that doesn't even take into consideration all the blow outs she had in the beginning!

We used lap cloths all the time when changing diapers to contain all of the blow outs - protects whatever surface you're changing the baby on - my baby also had a habit of peeing EVERY time you tried to change her - you'd get the clean diaper under her and surprise - she's peeing - lap cloths kept us from having to clean up the surface under her - just toss the lap cloth in the wash - used lots of them!

Wipes are one of the most used items for any and every baby - I use Seventh Generation - chlorine free safest baby wipe.

We used 1-2 sleep sacks every night and only had 3 so were constantly washing those - preferred the swaddle ones to keep her calm.

Also will need a several pacifiers if using since they constantly drop them and need to be washed- my baby only liked the Nuk ones - whatever your baby likes make sure to get the silicone ones that are paraben, phalate and PVC free (same as your bottles and teethers.)

Until you know what your baby is like you need to have a minimum of everything - one package of cloth diapers to use as burp cloths, about 14 bibs, 14 outfits, 7 lap cloths, 4 pacifiers, several sleep sacks, several containers of wipes and diapers - (my baby went to the bathroom every time she ate - so that was 12 times a day -have LOTS of diapers) - that quantity should get you through the first week or two with minimum laundry and then you can purchase what you need based on your baby. No matter what you buy prior to birth there will be things you had no idea you would need so badly once the baby arrives and things you thought you just had to have that you never use!

the above is your answer to swaddling

When my daughter was first born to about 2 months I went through about 2-3 receiving blankets a day, I used A LOT of burp cloths in the first couple of months. I think it is important to have (at least for the first couple months) pajamas or clothes that open from the bottom so you can easily get to the diaper, I used my swing and pack n play the most.

I think the most important thing to have the most of would be patience. Everything else is secondary.

I would say at least 3 burp cloths a day, 3 bibs a day, 2 receiving blankets to wrap them up and swaddle. Have at least enough to get you through a week without laundry because the last thing you want to worry about it.

Clothes.

I used one swaddleme for swaddling. I use 2 recieving blankets... one is her bedtime blanket, the other I keep in the diaper bag to get her to the car in the rain... I've used a burp cloth about 5 times total... I guess if a baby was formula fed or had reflux they made be more important. I find them pointless for breastfed babies.

I have 15 washcloths and I do use them all... not by necessity, I could get by with one package of them and just do wash more. I guess they would be my most used item... baby needs to have her face washed daily, then I use 2 in the shower with her every time I bathe her...

I think it depends on the baby. It also depends on your habits with the baby. Are you nursing or bottle-feeding? Formula or breastmilk? If formula, that is going to be #1 on expenses (next to diapers). You'll need enough bottles to last you 2 or 3 days (unless you want to be washing bottles all day). You'll need about 2-3 outfits per day (depending on weather and baby's soiling habits). I only had 2 receiveing blankets and 3 fleece blankets (winter baby) for my daughter. You'll need 2 fitted crib sheets. The number of burp cloths you'll need depends on how much baby spits up. I bought a pack of 12 cloth diapers to use and was washing them every 3-4 days. You can make do with what you have. Just remember to enjoy that little one because they aren't little for long!

You basically want to have enough for a week, if you consider you may do laundry at least once. You need extras of things like that for when the baby spits up all over them. I had about 5 receiving blankets, I got two packs of burp cloths that I really liked (Gerber flannel ones - soft, big and thick enough, they didn't show spit-up stains and they came clean nicely) but ended up buying a couple more packs on my own later on, onesies in all sizes are good to have, at least a pack, cuz even if you find later you prefer a certain brand over another, you still have them at first when you need a bigger size, and you can always use them as backups. Onesies depend on the pack - some come in 3 packs like Gerber, some come in 6 packs like the store brand. 2 or 3 packs of either to start with is good. Wipes are good to buy in big packs, once you find the ones you prefer, same with diapers. The biggest packs are always cheaper, at least when I was buying them. Pacifiers, you'll want to have many if you are using them, in case some get lost or dirty, you may need extras in between. A lot of bibs are nice once they start on solids, they get messy and you'll need clean ones often. Sleepers are a good item too, kinda like onesies as far as being prepared with different sizes.

Edit - oohh, crib or bassinet sheets. I always had at least 2 mattress covers for each, along with several extra sheets. Necessary when they go thru spurts of diaper leaks at night time!

Receiving blankets - they double as burp cloths, much bigger for better coverage!

WIPES! - They go through a ton of those!

I had probably 15-20 receiving blankets and about 10 burp cloths.

besides diapers and wipes...i find that i'm changing clean burp cloths ALL the time. the 6ply birdseye fold are the best and most absorbant. i've purchased about 3 packs of them to keep from having to wash them all the time. i have 4 muslin swaddle blankets that are great to have throughout the house or in your diaperbag too.

I had a Daughter who projectile vommited all the time. I never knew she was have these problems and continued up until she was close to 3 years old so I was grateful to have my thick chinese cloth diapers. They were thick and could hold a bottle of formula. I still have a few of them around today. They make wonderful cloths for cleaning and soaking up liquid messes.

I also loved the soft receiving blankets. Since she was so tiny (preemie) I would roll them up and put them around her carseat or other places I needed her to fit.

Onesies. I never could have enough of these and I loved the white ones because I could bleach them out when they got stained.

Terry or soft cotton sleepers. These are wonderful and expecially when they get to the point where they try to take their diaper off which most will.

I love large receiving blankets (esp great for breast feeding on the go as a cover up)...I rarely use burp clothes...and I rarely use bibs though I have about 20 from my shower...it's just easier to change a shirt once it's dirty. I say buy lots of socks...I always lose them in the laundry!

We use ALOT of Burp cloths. We bought a pack of 12 and then went to get more once he arrived. If you think you will need one every feed and at first you'll be feeding about 10 times a day!

We got 6 blankets although we only use them when out and about.

I would strongly recommend getting baby sleeping bags (babygro). Our baby loves his and it save worrying about blankets falling off and the baby getting underneath them. We have 3.

You also get through a ton of baby wipes......

Good luck! xx

If nursing - about ten - twelve (two packages) of recieving blankets. You can use them as burp clothes too. If not, just get a few and about a dozen burp clothes.

Bibs... lots & lots of bibs. Not so much for feeding, but if you have a drooler, you'll need a lot of bibs or a lot of outfits and bibs are easier to change :)

I used burp clothes, but they're not a neccessity. I had a hundred receiving blankets & they do come in handy, but you won't need too many.

Wipes.

I didn't use receiving blankets - he didn't like them much. So I used those as extra burp cloths. (Hey, at least I used them! LOL)

I've found that you can never have enough wipes. I use them for everything. It doesn't help now that my son is old enough that he thinks he wants to play with them too. ARGH! LOL

Just have lots of everything!!

I was reading a pregnancy magazine the other day that i found from when i was pregnant and it had a baby essentials list and it was saying oh have 6 sleepsuits 4 blankets, n so on and so on. And it just made me giggle.

Because i followed it and i was constantly usning the washing machine. So i had to run out to mother care and stock up.

So just buy lots and in bulk unless you like washing!

wipes you will need alot of i use them foreverything, when i change his diaper to wipe his hands or face., i had about a dozen or so blankets my son was born in the summer though so i didnt need alot, i never really used burp cloths as my son didnt spit up alot, i had gotten alot of binkys but my son was picky about what kinda binky he would use so hold off on that til you know what kinds he likes. i would stock up on extra crib sheets maybe have like 3 or extra ones to start with and as he/she gets older you may want more. i had tylenol on hand at all times cause once he started teething i went through it fast!!! thats about all i can think of right now

I've used about 7-8 receiving blanks, never really used burp cloths. haha. they use formula the most. i've used pampers swaddlers.. they are the BEST... now my sons older i'm not as particular, just as long as they dont leak but i've found that pampers are the best.

one thing i LOVE and still use are these disposable and wasable extremely absorband cloths. they are great! keeps things dry when you get sprinkled on..

I used Huggies when my son was first born because they have a little cut-out for the umbilical cord.

Once my son's umbilical cord stump fell off, I switched him to 'Pampers Swaddlers.'

I kept him in the 'Swaddlers' until he outgrew them. (Swaddlers only go up to size 2-3) .. Once he outgrew the Swaddlers, I switched him back to Huggies size 4 and he's wearing those now. I buy them in bulk,

I have about 10 receiving blankets; they come in VERY handy. I only have about 5 burp cloths; which I rarely use.

Before my son was born we went to Costco and bought baby wipes in bulk, however, my son was born with extremely sensitive skin, and was unable to use those wipes. We had to buy him 'sensitive' wipes.

the recieving blankets that are typically sold in stores were way to small. you need at something at least 35x35 inches for swaddling

I never used a single receiving blanket. (We used cloth, so they doubled as burp rags.)

I think it's important to have a lot of bath stuff. It goes so quickly. And if you are bottle feeding, try to have a lot of new ones on hand for when the old ones go bad.

For the people that gave thumbs down, I don't mean when the formula goes bad! I mean replace the actual bottles occasionally!

i had wayyyy to many receiving blankets. my daughter didn't like to be wrapped tight, anyway.

you'll need lots of wipes. if you plan on formula feeding, you'll need lots of formula, bottles, nipples, etc.
