What do you think about this- is this a ok thing to do or a bad thing?

As a new mom I find my self divided and confused. What is the right thing or wrong thing to do ya know. My question is when you are outside and you have to bring your baby out in the cold..... is it ok to cover their face loosely with a blanket or is it not ok. My mom said its a big no no, while my friends have done it. What do you do??

The only time I have taken Taylor outside is when she is in her carrier. Then I put a blanket over the top to block the cold air. Even then I usually have a hat on her as well.

I've done it when it was just a quick trip from house to car. If I'm taking the baby in some place where he is still in his car seat, I just tent the whole thing with a blanket. It takes more then a few seconds to suffocate so as long as it's not for a significant about of time, it won't hurt the baby. I've done that with all of my children and my eldest will be 7 in about 4 months.

I think if you just put the blanket over the baby for a short period its fine like from inside the house to in the car from the car to into the store etc. Dont wrap it just place it over the baby so that so cold air is hitting them. I live in WNY and its is freezing this time of yr. I always throw a blanket over my daughter head. When she was a new born I had a car seat cover which went over her car seat and was away from her face You can get them anywhere from walmart to babies r us

I think it would depend on how young the baby was. If they were under 3-4 months I just wouldn't. I'm not sure I have a rational reason for that - it would just feel wrong to me. Now that my son is older, I know he'd just snatch the blanket away if it annoyed him, but I don't cover his face in the cold. I bundle him up, put a hat on with ears and put him in the stroller. If it's too windy I put the sunshade down on the stroller to block out the wind.

It's been really cold lately, but he doesn't seem to mind his face getting a bit chilly if the rest of him is warm.

That sounds totally fine! Really i mean when you consider the risks, they seem out of the question. A loose blanket can't hurt the baby..

It most likely has its eyes closed anyways. I think it's definitely a fine thing to do. You have to protect it right? And if the wind picks up....

I wouldn't. It's obvious that it could make it hard for a small baby to breath. Either put a blanket over the entire car seat or buy a car seat cover. I always just put a blanket over the whole carseat.

When my son was a tiny baby I would put him in his carrier and put a thin blanket over the carrier itself until I got him into the car, that way the blanket didn't actually touch his face but it helped keep the wind and cold air out of his face.

Just make sure it's loose....it will be fine. I have a seat cover by JJ Cole and it is fabulous. You can zip it up around the baby and lay the flap over their face. You should invest in one. And they cannot kick it off of them so you don't have to worry about them getting chilly.

if you take your baby out in the cold with a carseat, throw a loose blanket over the handle that covers her/his body. It wont harm them, my mom does it all the time and it's definatley helpful in keepin their face from the wind

If it's not long enough for your child to suffocate, there's no risk. Like, to and from the car is okay if you're paying attention to the child to make sure they keep breathing easily. They also make fuzzy covers for car seats that you could use, that do not directly cover the child but provide plenty of shelter from the cold.

that's what i've always wondered. i have seen many people cover their baby's faces with a blanket. but if you put your baby in a those carrier things, you can put the blanket over that and they wont suffocate.

I have one of them car seat covers for my daughter. But when I am not using it, I just toss a blanket over her car seat. I like it to be loosely over her face so shes not struggling to get it out of her face or for air.

I think you should be careful to wrap a baby's head/face with a blanket because they can very easily get wrapped up in the blanket or move and maybe stop breathing and it takes a matter of seconds to lose a child. I just took my CPR certification class a few weeks ago and we learned a lot about what can happen to children, infants and adults and what to do if they stop breathing and of course we want to make sure that we avoid them being put in any position that they might stop breathing. What I do is I put some very warm clothes on my baby with mittens if necessary (depends on how cold it is outside) and a warm jacket with a hood if possible (again depending on how cold it is outside) and a cap (like the snow caps, because they gather in the warmth much better as they are thicker) and warm socks (maybe 2 pairs if it gets cold enough) and warm shoes. I then put a blanket around my baby, but not completely over his head, just around as to make sure that there is not much of a chance that he can move and smother himself or get tangeled up or anything like that. My son hates clothes and is happiest when he is naked or at least just with a diaper on because he gets so hot and sweats a lot (very much hot blooded.... just like daddy... unfortunately, ....not like mommy). There are some things that look like slings for babies that get wrapped around ones' chest and can snuggly carry a small baby, which are also sometimes used for mothers to discretely breastfeed their babies as well. I found a very interesting link www.theslingstation.com

that shows all sorts of slings and baby carriers including "baby wearing coats", water carriers, ring slings, hip carriers, twin baby wearing slings, traditional baby carriers, baby k'tan, beco butterfly II carrier, ergo baby carrier, mei tai baby carrier, wrap carriers, pouch slings, formal carriers, and organic baby carriers (for the eco-friendly crowd). I am not sure if this helps at all, but it worked for me and all of the bundling I explained earlier in this answer as well and No of course you are not bad and anyone who suggests that you are just too nosy and need to get a life... LOL We all live and learn as parents and as I stated before in my prior answers; unfortunately, our kids do not come with instructions and we just need to do the best we can to get them ready to be on their on in this scary world (that is getting scarier by the minute). You are doing great... keep up the good work.

Sincerely,

Cindy

If the baby seems happy about it, then its fine!

If, for example, it is screaming and crying and trying to squirm out of the blanket.... then its not ok.

:) Let the baby decide.

people do it plenty of times(i see it outside my window) it's fine if it's loosely....and i don't think you will cover it tight, i think everyone is smarter than that....

your fine especially in the cold.

I say no. Find a warm beanie type hat and COVER THEIR EARS. This keep them warm.Dress them warmly and bring extra blankets.

It's fine to cover them up as long as it's not smothering them.

it's not so bad... but if the baby doesn't like it, then don't do it... if he doesn't complain... then you should be fine!
