Question:
If..... You found a baby on your doorstep, would you keep the baby or turn it over to authorities?
2007-06-05 17:46:42 UTC
Very odd question, I know. I thought of it when I heard on the TV the other day, yet another young girl leaving her baby to die in the garbage. I know they have the safe drops but it got me to thinking what if a baby was left on my door what would I do.
I would love to hear other opinions.

Wasnt sure where to list this question.. Ethics? Parenting?

You would have to turn the baby in. If you decided to keep the baby, how would you get a birth certificate or social security card for the baby?

I think I would keep it just for a little while, think it over in mind a thousand times and then call the police an hour later. I would love to keep it but it's not the right thing to do. I would be too terrified that it may get sick or worse even die and then I would be in big trouble. A baby that was just left on a doorstep might not have had the best medical care. I too have thought about this and can't wait to read all the other answers! Thanks for bringing the subject up.

You would have to call authorities, for several reasons. you couldnt act as its parent because you have no ss card, birth certificate and no knowledge of medical issues with the infant or parents. if you did try to keep it and tried to enroll it in school or even just take it to the drs you could face major legal charges. and what if the baby was abducted and left on your doorstep? who would actually believe you found the baby there? authorities wouldnt. i do know that if it were to happen however and you wanted to adopt the baby, arrangments can be made if the legal parent is not found and no signs of abduction are indicated. i would want to keep the baby after the proper adjustments and legal things were done because obviously someone thought i would be able to care for this baby otherwise they wouldnt have left it on my doorstep and i wouldnt want it to be put into several different homes waiting to be adopted and going through all the mental anguish.

Definitely call the authorities. It would be unethical not to and open the door to a lot of problems. If you really were interested in keeping the baby, you could let them know. But, you would first have to be trained to be a foster parent and from there you could pursue adoption - given you wanted to and the baby were up for adoption.

I think you would have to call the police. There would be no way feasible to just keep the baby. You wouldn't have a birth certificate or ss# for it. Plus you would have a lot of explaining to do to people who asked were the baby came from. Living a lie doesnt seem right to me so I'd have to call the police. Although if no mother was find I think I'd offer to raise the baby.

From what I have an understanding of she wasn't the one one not to realize. It's an condominium problematic and not one of the associates knew both. From what I accumulate from what the police have mentioned, the basement is sound evidence and this unwell freak placed plenty of time, cash and energy to hold this a mystery adding a financial institution risk-free sort door so except you have been him you weren't getting into there. In the security of the deficient spouse he now not handiest abused his daughter however her as good. You realize she filed a lacking individuals record, and this man permit her figuring out darn good have been this deficient lady was once, and god bless the ones youngsters there father/grandfather is a nut.

I think you should take the baby in for the night and give it love! treat the baby nicely. Then the next day you should report the police that someone left a a baby on your door step and tell them if it's no ones daughter or son, if you could keep it.( if you WANT to adopt the baby) Thats what i would do.

obviously call the authorities.not only for the baby's sake, but for yours and the mothers. if she just had the baby and panicked she could need medical attention and the earlier you get help the better chance of finding her.for your sake.... stating the obvious you dont want to be implicated in this in any way. by all means give it a cuddle, keep it warm etc but its not an abandoned puppy its a person.

I'd call the police just so they'd have the paperwork on file in case the baby was abducted...I'm not in a position to take in a baby right now as we're expecting our first and having financial issues, so I'd call the police.

i would take care of the baby until authorities would be able to come get the baby and take it to a hospital where the baby would be checked over then put with an adoptive or foster home

As much as I would like to keep the baby, I would turn it over to authorites so a loving parent who wants a baby can adopt him/her and give the baby the care he/she deserves.

I would call the authorities. However, I would volunteer to go through the paperwork and process to be the "foster parent" for said baby. But I certainly would call the authorities.

And what if this baby on your doorstep had been abandoned by a kidnapper and its parents were frantically looking for it? If you were those parents and it was your child, would you want someone to "keep" your child?

I would probably want to keep it, but the right thing to do would be to turn it in. If I really grew to love it, I would see about adopting.
