Question:
When did you start giving other liquids to your baby? What were they, and what did you use? (sippy cup...)?

My daughter will be turning 11 months old. She eats all kinds of baby food, and is starting to eat other solids besides the crackers, etc. I want to make sure she is getting enough to drink. She takes a bottle, but not as often, and she tends to be full (refuses bottle) after eating food. Thanks!

The best liquid that you can give your baby is water. Most juices (except those marked 100% fruit juice) usually have too much sugar in them. And let's face it: at 11 months, would you rather have a cup of something that tastes sweet or something with no taste at all? Starting a healthy realtionship with water now will make it easier for her to drink water when she's older and needs to rehydrate after a long day of playing in the summer heat. Juice should be given sparingly to avoid an unshakable attachment. And as a rule, sodas and caffeinated drinks should not be introduced at all while her baby teeth are coming in. These cause tooth decay and caffeine can cause hyper-activity.

Also, make sure that you use more than one sippy cup to avoid a "favorite sippy" scenario, in which baby uses the same sippy day in and day out. Neglecting to wash sippy can help bacteria breed on her cup. You might also want to limit sippy use to meal and snack times at first to keep her from getting full from liquids.

I offered only water, in a sippy cup. You can start earlier, with boiled water sometime around 6 months.

from my experience with my niece and nephew around one yrs old i started giving them juice in a spill proof sippy cup when they were thirsty instead of milk all the time..before bed i would get them some milk but around the age of two and a half i didnt warm it up anymore for them..i would also start to mix in nestle quick..or strawberry quick to their milk as they liked it.. but around one i started to give them more juice when ever they ate lunch and dinner ..breakfast..they had milk in their cereal and a sippy cup of water to help wash it down..but what their doctor told me that juice is very good for them..gives them the vitamins they need that sometimes milk doesnt have enough vitamins...best thing for you is juice milk and water.. dont start with soda..that will be the hardest to stop...i gave them their first soda around 5 or 6..but they still drink their juice with lunch and dinner and have some milk in a spill proof cup and they are 7 and 8 now..i hope this helps you miss..good luck..Angel/m/mi
